Dependable Hands

What We Do

Meals, Clothing and Basic Necessities

Dependable Hands began serving meals each Sunday afternoon in “Tent City”, a homeless camp located under I-565 near downtown Huntsville.  After the camp was closed in June 2014, Dependable Hands partnered with and began serving meals at First Stop, an organization whose thrust is to reduce the homeless population in Madison County.  Dependable Hands now partners with the North Alabama Coalition for the Homeless (NACH) to provide meal service every Sunday at the Downtown Huntsville Library located at 915 Monroe Street, Huntsville, AL.

With the generous contributions from local businesses and benevolent donors, Dependable Hands provides clothing, blankets, personal hygiene products to individuals in need upon request.  Dependable Hands will purchase desperately needed prescription medications and pay utility bills or rent when the urgent need arises.

Dependable Hands operates a food bank which is fully registered with the North Alabama Food Bank and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  Additionally, canned food drives held by Ed White, Westlawn, and Martin Luther King Jr. Middle Schools of the Huntsville City School System also have supported the Dependable Hands Food Bank for over 5 years.  The current location of the food bank is 1447 Baites Road, Toney, AL.  Current hours of operation are Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00am – 1:00pm or by appointment.

Genesis 4:9 “I Am My Brother’s Keeper”

In 2013 and 2014, Dependable Hands partnered with the Veteran’s Administration to host Operation Stand Down Huntsville, a three-day weekend in November for homeless veterans in the community to have a warm place to sleep, three hot meals, and a variety of social services.

In 2015 and 2016, Dependable Hands solely hosted the three-day weekend by providing these same services for all homeless citizens in the community.  Through the generous donations of food, clothing, and personal time of the local businesses and individuals, Dependable Hands was able to feed, clothe and provide personal care services to over 50 men and women each year in what is now called Genesis 4:9 "I Am My Brother's Keeper".  Dependable Hands aims to host this event annually as resources through donations and sponsorships are available.
